Your first camping trip: the complete beginner's checklist

Your first camping trip doesn't need expensive gear or a remote wilderness. A campsite with toilets and running water is the perfect place to start.

Pick an easy first trip

Choose a campsite within a couple of hours of home, go for one or two nights, and pick a weekend with a good forecast. Book ahead in busy seasons.

Shelter and sleep

  • Tent (practise pitching it at home first)
  • Sleeping bag rated for the night-time temperature
  • Sleeping mat or air bed
  • Pillow, or a stuff sack filled with clothes

Kitchen

  • Camping stove, fuel and lighter
  • Pan, mugs, plates and cutlery
  • Cool box, water container and washing-up kit

Clothing

Pack layers: a base layer, a warm fleece, and a waterproof jacket. Bring a warm hat for the evening, even in summer, plus spare socks.

Other essentials

  • Head torch with spare batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Sun cream and insect repellent
  • Bin bags to take your rubbish home

Before you leave

Check the forecast, charge your phone, and tell someone where you're going.
